What distinguishes a real estate agent from REALTORS® in Jamaica, and why is a copyright symbol used at the end of REALTORS®?

In Jamaica, the distinction between a real estate agent and a REALTOR® is significant, even though the terms are often used interchangeably.

A real estate agent is a licensed professional who assists clients in buying, selling, or renting properties. Typically affiliated with a real estate brokerage, they facilitate transactions on behalf of their clients.

Conversely, a REALTOR® is a real estate agent who holds membership in the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) or its international affiliates, such as the REALTORS® Association of Jamaica (RAJ). By becoming a REALTOR®, an agent commits to upholding the strict Code of Ethics and professional standards set by the association. This code emphasizes integrity, professionalism, and ethical conduct in all real estate dealings.

The copyright symbol (©) accompanying the term REALTORS® indicates its status as a registered collective membership mark owned by the National Association of REALTORS®. This symbol distinguishes genuine REALTORS® who adhere to the association's standards from other real estate professionals.
